FREE GUIDE TO APPLYING SELF TANNERS TO ACHIEVE
THE ULTIMATE NATURAL LOOK:

Applying self tanning products correctly will help ensure you achieve a completely natural look that people cannot distinguish between being real of fake. Of course, using a product that gives you a natural colour is equally important when you're faking it, and Bluff Self Tanners deliver this and more in an instant. Follow the below guide to help ensure you get best results and maximum enjoyment from your self tanning application every time.

In order to fully prepare your skin prior to tanning, you should shave or wax the day before applying any fake tan. This will give the skin a chance to settle back to its normal state prior to any self tan being applied. Apply the tanner directly onto the skin, don’t apply any other product prior (like lotions/moisturisers), as to do so may result in the tan not developing properly - they could act as a barrier to the tanning product being absorbed properly into your skin.

The only exception to this rule is if you have difficult areas (like knees, ankles, elbows) which are harder skinned that absorb too much of the tanning product and end up darker than the rest of your body. By using a barrier cream like Vaseline it will help ensure these more difficult areas absorb only a small amount of the tanning product and stay even in colour with the rest of your body.

Applying Fake Tanning Products Effectively:

Self Tanning products work best when applied onto clean dry skin straight after a bath or shower. For best results, try to avoid washing using soaps or products that are high in alkaline as your skin should ideally be neutral when applying self tan. For best results always use a mitt or tanning glove as this ensures even application and no streaks. Apply the self tanning product evenly all over the body, ensure you’re applying it evenly and not applying too much, if you want to go darker you can always apply another layer once the first layer has developed fully. Apply one layer of self tan at a time, let it develop fully and then if you want to go darker simply re-apply in 12-24 hours. Don’t re-apply too soon as this can affect the final result and the tan is more likely to flake off. You also shouldn’t shower too soon after applying the tanning product, as self tanning products need time to develop and by showering within a few hours of application it could result in some of the product being washed off and not giving you a tan as desired. Perspiring can also end up in the product coming off prior to developing in colour affecting the overall result, so avoid exercise (or anything that makes you perspire) just whilst the tan is developing. If after the tan has fully developed you still haven’t got the colour you were aiming for, double-check a few things – did you use any other products prior to tanning? Maybe you haven’t used enough of the product? Or even used too much of the product? Sometimes trial and error is the best solution, but once you’ve applied a fake tan product a few times you’ll become used to the application process and be able to perfect your colour easily every time.

If you are not using gloves or a mitt to apply the product, make sure you wash your hands well after you’ve finished applying the product. We highly recommend using gloves or a tanning mitt in all circumstances though when using a self tanning product that contains a guide colour, as this guide colour can potentially stain your hands. Be extra careful when you’re washing your hands not to splash the water onto your arms or body, as this can end up in splash marks being visible on the skin after the tan has developed, from where the water has washed the product off your skin before it has had a chance to absorb fully. Tanning the back of your hands is often forgotten about, but to ensure all-over even coverage you should try this - apply a small amount of self tanner with a sponge or a tissue onto the back of your hands after you have washed them; also wipe around your wrists to avoid any marks. Alternatively, apply a small amount of fake tan to the back of one hand and rub the back of both hands together. Use a baby-wipe or tissue to remove any leftover fake tan from your palms. If you’re using a tanning mitt, just wipe the back of your hands over with the mitt once you’ve finished applying fake tan to your body – there will still be ample tan left in the mitt to cover the back of your hands perfectly.

Once you’ve finished applying your fake tan, give it a few minutes to completely absorb before getting dressed. Our Self Tanners dry to the touch almost instantly, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long to get to dressed when using Bluff. Some self tanning products (like Bluff) give you an instant colour – perfect if you are going out and want some colour instantly.

Choose your self tanning product wisely as the colour that results from self tanning products can vary widely between brands. In our opinion, never go for the cheap products, the ingredients required to give you a natural colour don’t come cheap, so ask yourself this – if the product is cheap how have they managed to include the expensive ingredients? The answer is often that they simply haven’t. If the product doesn’t include the best ingredients it will simply turn you a poor colour and the ingredients will not work in harmony with your skin tones to give you a natural tanned look – the result will simply appear fake. By investing in a better product that is more realistically priced to reflect the use of only the best ingredients available (like Bluff Self Tanners) you are giving yourself peace of mind that the self tanner will work with your skin type to result in a completely natural looking and long-lasting colour that will draw compliments from people, rather than stares. These more realistically priced products will also often last you longer because you’ll find you won’t need to apply as much of the product, therefore they become more cost-effective over the long-term. You’ll also end up with an amazing tan that you’ll never want to give up, no matter what time of the year it is.
